Global Day for the conservation of the Ozone Layer
The Global Day for the conservation of the ozone layer is celebrated on the 16th of September, instituted by the United Nations with the objective to inform the public about this problem. Ever since 1985, the year in which the Vienna Convention for the protection of the ozone layer was adopted, which was followed in quick succession by a number of international accords, a substantial reduction in the production of CFCs (ChloroFluorocarbon Compounds) has been achieved, the compounds principally responsible for the destruction of the ozone layer.
